Making Changes: an anthology

Bridge House Publishing, who included Tricks of Firelight in their Advent Anthology are going great guns with new titles. Coming out soon: a book of Bible stories with a difference. It's likely title is I have four stories included. Watch this space for more details. It will be good!

C.S. Lewis wrote about the Land of Narnia where ‘it was always winter and never Christmas’. Nowadays, the month of December is ‘always Christmas and never Advent’. That mystical, hushed time of preparing for a great Wonder has been wiped out by the sound of Jingle Bells.

Making Changes puts Advent back on the map. Twenty different authors have produced twenty-four stories, an Advent Calendar for December. “However,” writes the editor and author, Gill James, “whilst these stories do suit perfectly that delicious tine of the year when we can shut out the dark nights and curl up by a fire with a good book, they are relevant for any time of the year. They celebrate life and all that is precious about it.”

Jenny’s story, Tricks of Firelight has a Polish setting. Three young friends shelter in a tumbledown hut. It is Christmas Eve, that time of wonder. A knock comes to the door. Antek opens the door. Outside in the snow stand a Jewish carpenter and his young wife… The young men look around in fear. It is war time. Enemy patrols are operating close by. They hear the strains of “Stille Nacht… Silent Night…”

What happens next is a thing of wonder – or perhaps it was all just a trick of firelight?
